Yesterday (15 March 2015), the world’s first domain name turned 30. The first domain name ever registered was Symbolics.com, and it was registered by now-defunct computer manufacturer Symbolics Inc. Back then, companies had a mere 9 domain endings to choose from: .COM; .GOV; .MIL; .IL; .NET; .ORG; .US; .UK and .EDU. Nowadays, of course, there are thousands of TLDs (Top Level Domains) – with everything from .HORSE to .CLOTHING available to register.
The European Domain Centre has put together an infographic of new TLDs by year from 1985. It’s pretty cool to see how the space has expanded year by year!
